Papers of James Monroe, 1795-1796.

The collection contains a draft of a letter, 1795 July 14 from Monroe to the Committee of Public Safety, Paris, concerning a French decree regarding foreigners and French citizenship; and a letter, 1795 December 2, to the Minister of Exterior Relations of the French Republic which includes a note in French, 1796 August 23, regarding a dispute between Joseph Sands and William Varis. The final item is a manuscript entitled "Observations" in an unidentified hand, setting forth financial claims of James Monroe against the U.S. Government (with title in Monroe's hand).

James Monroe, fifth president of the United States of America (b. April 28, 1758, Monroe Hall, Virginia-d. July 4, 1831, New York, New York) fought with distinction in the Continental Army, and he practiced law in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
